This player has played everything I have thrown in it, including downloaded .AVI files and PAL formatted DVDs from Europe. My DiVx DVDs play flawlessly. I have not had any problems with my Toshiba XD-E500 after months of use. I did find that it is best not to use some of the fancy effects because there are offsetting drawbacks. Also, one should calibrate the HDTV with THX, using an enabled DVD, as soon as possible. Your color accuracy sharpness, and sound will be enhanced.

The Toshiba XD-E500 works perfectly with REGZA Link on my Toshiba HDTV to provide enhancements, as well. Any Toshiba owners using HDMI should switch to REGZA Link, if the television set has it.

I use my Toshiba XD-E500 and an Apple TV device. After I've watched DVDs, I digitally convert the ones I purchased and want to keep for my iTunes library. The image quality is as good as or better than the DVD player's when played back on the same HDTV. Doing this can take a lot of hassle out of having the movie or television program you want to see right at hand.

I really don't understand the comments rife with lamentations. Maybe these commenters thought they were buying a Blu-Ray DVD player.

I bought this one on a whim just to try out the extended detail enhancement feature. Of the three (Sharp, Color, Contrast) Sharp worked very well. I have a properly calibrated set, so the other two were pretty much of no use. On newer films Sharp added just the right amount of sharpness to scenes without additional halos or other edge enhancement artifacts (the better the film's cinematography the better it works). With older 4:3 aspect films or non-HD TV shows from the 90s the image is stretch and there is nothing I can do to fix it. My Vizio TV can't adjust for it (it just sees a 1080P image coming from the player and keeps it in its "normal" state - stretched in other words) and neither can the player. That's pretty frustrating and I may end up sending this back for that reason. Need to take stock of how many DVDs I rent that are 4:3. The audio is good/average. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly acceptable. The build quality of the unit is very light. The case of the player feels like a tin can and the remote is as tiny and lightweight as a child's toy. The buttons are very small and unintuitive.

Again, for what its basic purpose is (DVD upscaled playback), it does a great job on 16:9 widescreen material, particularly with Sharp enabled. The image quality rivals at times the Oppo DV-980H (no joke) and is slightly better than the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. I wished Toshiba had chosen to put the XDE feature into a more quality player from a feature and build standpoint. It would have a real winner then - even at another say, for that quality.

Edit: Well, after a week or so of ownership I feel I was a bit too harsh on the XDE-600, so I bumped the rating up to four stars. The image quality is so good for the low price that I can overlook the deficiencies. Plus I found a work-around of sorts for the 4:3 aspect problem. Set the HDMI resolution to 480p in the player and it will display in the proper aspect ratio on the TV. The only snag is that the XDE settings won't work in anything but 1080p, but since they are mostly older movies (that use that format) I can live with it.

Toshiba SD-3950 Progressive Scan DVD Player Customer Review

I purchased this several months ago from Amazon after reading all the reviews -- including the ones that complained of pixellation and out-of-box failure. So I ordered this inexpensive unit with some reserve, and saved the box for months, thinking I might have to send it back.

But no. What I've found instead is that it reliably produces a stunningly-sharp, hi-def picture, and sends lovely, pure, unadulterated sound through to my surround receiver (Yamaha HTR-5650). I've got it hooked to a Toshiba 42" widescreen HD-ready RPTV (42H83), with Monster component video cables, and I feed it a fairly fatty diet of 3-4 DVDs every week. Not a pixel or a plip to be seen.

Of course, DVDs of movies made pre-HD-era won't look as good. Even this super-machine can't remove the grain from older discs.

The remote is a bit cheesy, not worthy of the sleek player, and the buttons can be inscrutable in the dim light of a home-theatre room. But that's a small quibble, considering the great value of this machine.

I purchased this when my MUCH-more-expensive Sony 5-disc DVD player died after just 14 months. The Sony will still play CDs, but I use it only as a "jukebox" when hosting dinner parties. When I want to play a single CD or CD-R, whether 80s pop, Linken Park, Joni Mitchell, a Mozart aria, or carpet-rumbling classical pipe-organ music, this Toshiba unit leaves my Sony whimpering in tail-dragging shame.

This is an amazing value, an absolute must-buy. Already have a DVD player in your family room? Buy this for your bedroom...and switch them when you get the chance.

Searched all around looking for a DVR and was lucky I came across this one! I am impressed with all its features and since I have many home mini-dv tapes, with clips of school made commercials, and videotapes of memorable events from TV, it was great to organize all of these moments (1-5 minutes long) on DVD. The best thing is the MENU feature at the beginning of each DVD. You can watch this clip, and then another clip, in any order you want. You can even change the color of the backgrounds to suit your tastes. At the last Christmas party, guests would choose what clip they wanted to see by perusing the menu. I had 21 clips (4-5 minutes each), and it was neat how people would look through the menu and then decide what they wanted to see. Besides, the thumbnails (depending on which frame you want to use) entice the viewer to the clip. This is far better than fast forwarding on videotape, and not really knowing what is next, or how far on the videotape the clip is. Not only that, I can label these titles or chapters, so reference is very easy. As a teacher, it is easy to showcase (educational) clips that only last 2 or 3 minutes long and have it all logged on one DVD. I tried it in the classroom and it was so easy...just to click the menu and there your clip showed. Of course, you have to organize it at first, but after that, it is a cinch. A DVD to last for YEARS!
What I really did not like that much was the manual. I found it a bit confusing (maybe it was me and my learning this new DVD format), but after a couple of hours of toying with the DVR...I found myself very comfortable with it. You also have to program all your labeling through the remote, which is ok. It is almost like text messaging, but once you get used to it, it isn't that bad. Love this product and recommend it to anyone who wants to organize all their homevideos on DVD.
I am still learning new features as I go along, but as of right now, I am very happy!

I bought this unit a year ago on sale (at a ridiculously low price) and have found it to be just great. It offers everything you might want in a TIVO and DVD player/recorder unit (although it does not HD-record, if that is what you need). It is especially good for those who don't need all the bells and whistles of full TIVO service and who only need the basic TIVO service (which is just fine) WITHOUT A RECURRING MONTHLY CHARGE (that is the great benefit of this unit).

I had TIVO Basic for about 9 months and was satisfied with it (and especially with no recurring charges). Having said that, I did upgrade to full TIVO service, but only because TIVO was changing its business model and was eliminating lifetime subscription service--if I had to decide what to do now without that possibility, I would get this unit and live quite contentedly with TIVO basic. I mean, Season Passes and wishlists are great, as well as a 2-week look at listings, but not at 0+ a year for me (no cable here, which makes a difference as well, as there is less to search). The Basic service makes the unit into the equivalent of a charged videotape recorder.

By the way, despite what is written below, other boxes do NOT all come with Basic TIVO service--you must get a TIVO subscription with most. Again, that is the great benefit of this box, especially for those of us with more limited TV service or needs, or who do not want yet more monthly charges or the equivalent.

Memorex DVD+RW worked well in this machine once the DVD was formatted (each time). However when I recorded from my Sony rdr vxd655 the Panasonic would not play it back. It would say nothing had been recorded and to record I would have to format prior to recording even though it had previously been formatted. I brought it to Best Buy for repair but after 3 weeks they said the machine was ok but that I would have to use a higher quality DVD. So as a possible caution if you're using this DMR be sure to use a high quality DVD.

I needed to replace an aging VHS, and was tired of crappy recordings. My TV is a Sony, with basic cable input [no cable box]. No HD.

The Toshiba hooked up simply, the same as the VHS. The manual was complete, and understandable. Recording is simple, and works well...the 6 hour mode comes out just fine, as good as any VHS.

I've recorded on DVD-R, and DVD-RW. No problems, save a cut off third show on a three show recording onto a DVD-R... I'm sure this can be overcome by switching to a 4 hour record mode. Said DVD-R was playable on my JVC DVD player.

Note that a DVD is a different animal than a VHS...you cannot re-record over a track, instead you have to go in and delete it. Titles can be given to multiple recordings on the same disc. Closed captions may not record.

This unit was described as "entry level". I sure wouldn't want one that was any more complicated...you can do many, many things with editing and recording...8 shows a month ahead of time. Those who were critical must have more complicated systems to satisfy, or need HD, or something.

I couldn't be more satisfied, esp. for the money !

I added a great Tuner with a Gov sponsored TV Converter box ( Insignia from Best Buy that I have). I then purchased a Dayton SVC1 S-Video Jack to RCA Plug Converter, and a S-Video Cable here. Connect the Plug end to the Video Out of the TV Converter box, and the other end of the S-video cable to the rear "L1" S-video of the Recorder. Total cost for cable and plug was about with shipping.
This recorder can edit a recording with +R DVDs (not -R) via chapter markers. I was able to hide the commercials. Once finalized it would be permanent.

The only thing that is a little frustrating is that the response time from remote to machine is delayed. Also - even if you push the buttons on the unit itself, it doesn't respond quickly. You have to wait for a few seconds for it to do what you tell it, so just make sure you don't press the buttons a whole bunch of times if it's not reacting fast enough - and learn how to be patient with it.....

Toshiba RS-TX60 DVD Recorder with 160 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder Customer Review

I purchased this item from Computer Brain - fully expected to not get it by Xmas - as I ordered just the week before. It came with 3 days to spare! Hookup was easy and straightforward, there was a special running so I purchased the lifetime TIVO advanced service - well worth it. I've scheduled items to be recorded on the TIVO from the web, and downloaded items to my laptop and desktop PCs. I used a USB wired Ethernet adaptor that plugs into my wireless bridge (Along with my XBOX and XBOX 360). They all coexist over the wireless ethernet just fine.

The subscription or "season pass" functionality is just awesome. I no longer watch live TV - I have the TIVO record it at the quality, frequency I want and watch the TIVOed shows. Never understood why people raved about them until I had one. The DVD burner works great - just two minor gripes - it would be really nice to have the ability to mark a begin and end point in a show and record just that - I'm not talking advanced editing, just a couple of quick bookmarks. Especially with Encore shows you typically get an extra 10 or 15 minutes of blather on either end of the movie that you end up having to record that sometimes pushes the movie over the time limit of the recording media so it needs 2 disks.

The other minor complaint is that it only takes DVD-R/RW but that's not that big a deal.

It would be nice if the unit had the secondary input jacks replicated on the back so you didn't have to plug in video recorders for dubbing into the unit in the front, but it's not THAT big a deal.

All in all a terrific unit with a nice design and a lot of utility!

I HAd to buy this because somone I give DVD's to said the Samsung 357
was giving errors.
I was not so sure, but for the price of one of these as a refurb, I cured my error problems ( probably a tired laser).
This recorder offers limited speed options and in video mode (-R)
makes a really plain-jane DVD ( especially compared to the Samsung menus)
unless you use +R ad edit it.
But it is the easiest one I have used ( Pioneer Samsung Phillips) to just insert
a DVD and press "record".
At the end you just name it and finalize. Really very easy to do. A good value.

I got this for the purpose of digitizing my old VHS Home Videos at the same time I'm looking for something to improve my DVD viewing thru upconvert. I have a 6-yr old Sony projection HDTV with DVI and component video input @720p/1080i. I bought an HDMI-to-DVI cable since this unit will upconvert only at 480p when used with component video cable. But then upon my initial setup I was disappointed with the contrast/color running at 720p/1080i that my old DVD player displays even better. I found that with the converter cable, it only renders in RGB and not as PyPbPr signals. As I dig more time on discovering the setup options, I have found that the factory defaults have the progressive scanning turned off and the HDMI RGB is not in enhanced color mode. Once I had corrected this, I got an excellent viewing of my sci-fi movies. I did set to 720p which gives better picture/clarity than the interlaced 1080i.

I purchased this fine item and not being the brightest bulb on the tree, I have had some adventures trying to make things perform. My son, who lives in Las Vegas, and it very computer astute, brought up the instruction manual on his computer and said it was the most inept he had ever seen. Did'nt make a lot of sense to him. I decided to call Toshiba's hotline and guess what, the nice man at Toshiba said the same thing, the instruction manual is a jumble. After several weeks I finally made a tape recording and was able to make a disc recording also.
The manual said all discs must be formatted,after trying to format a DVD-R, I called Tosiba and found out that DVD-R disc are already formatted when you buy them, this was not mentioned in the manual
Also, when trying to set the timer recorder the machine would take off running on record. Now I wait till I have the timer set before putting in the disc or tape. The recordings I have made have been good quality
After attempting to record a disc and play it back, the screen says no TiTle List found. Nowhere does it explain what this means, what's a Title List? I finally figured out that there was nothing recorded on the darn disc, why cound'nt they just say that there is nothing on the disc?
All in all, the machine does work fine and eventually I get it figured out, a more agreeable manual would make life much easier

The reviews and details of this product were right on. It was not difficult to set up. Took a little time to understand the basics since the DVD has many options for use. My old VCR was extremely simple but I can now tape timed programs on the VCR and also on the DVD. I am still learning playback which has too many buttons to easily understand. I used the VCR transfer to DVD feature which worked ok. Quality of picture was not as good as I would like but I am still learning the many options to improve this.

For a person who's VCR has died and not an electronics genius, this is as simple as you can find for replacement. It will take a few tries to find the right buttons to do the basic functions but the manual is detailed and easy to understand. I am pleased with the product.

If you do not want to read thick instruction manuals, do NOT buy this product.

However, no one has commented on two super features of this machine: (1) Fast dubbing from hard disk to DVD-R discs. At LP speed, 4 hours 15 minutes of program content can be burned in about 25-30 minutes onto one blank 4.7 GB disc, so much better than at agonizingly slow 1:1 speeds on cheaper machines with fewer features! (2) When playing back a DVD or hard disk program at 150% speed, the sound is chopped but understandable, with no high-pitched "Alvin & the Chipmunks" effect. So when commercials are skipped, a one-hour documentary, talking head lecture or discussion group, a sporting event, or boring program can be played back in about 30 minutes and you can hear all the words! Even music is listenable, though the tempo is 50% faster. If you missed a play in sports or a word in speech, you just have to reverse and play back at regular speed; the sound IS cut out of course when playback is at half, one-eighth or one-sixteenth speed. I also have an RD-XS32 machine which does not have the TV GUIDE feature (you just program timer recorder settings manually) and also an RD-XS35 machine which is similar to the XS34 (with TV GUIDE). The RD-XS32 machine has only an 80 GB hard disk, half that on the other machines; my XS32's built-in tuner produces unwanted picture noise on low Cable Channels 2 and 3, so I don't use it as much as the others. The XS32 IS more convenient when I am away from home for more than 8 days, because the timer programming can be extended over a year, whereas the TV GUIDE feature doesn't work unless you use the WEEKLY or REGULARLY frequency setting, and for other programs you are limited to 8 days advance programming.

As others have pointed out, it IS possible to manually program timer recordings on the XS34 and XS35, but the manual is poorly written: immediately under the major heading "Setting a recording", the manual should offer two options - "see p. 50 for manual setting, or continue below (on p.47) for automatic setting using TV GUIDE". The TOSHIBA corporation (and other Japanese companies) should hire a North American English-speaking person to edit the final copy [I am a third-generation Japanese-Canadian, so please don't accuse me of racism]; for example, the SMALL heading "Set recording by specifying details manually" on p.50 would have been more comprehensible if it had read "Setting timer recordings manually without TV GUIDE", or words to that effect. It's a shame that an otherwise brilliant machine has received bad reviews because of weaknesses in the Owner's Manual. I desperately want to purchase at least two more XS34 or XS35 units (I have already purchased separately two extra remote controls because I have worn out a few buttons on one, and the machine can be useless if even one button, e.g. the Down control, doesn't work). If TOSHIBA has been traumatized by the vitriolic response to their XS34 and is phasing it and its successors out, could anyone tell me of any competitor's machine which has the two great features I have noted above?

Another confusing section in the manual concerns setting the default settings for recording. The factory has set the SP speed as the default recording speed, which allows for about 2 hours on a blank 4.7 GB DVD-R disc. Since the picture is only slightly degraded at LP speed, and much better than a VHS SP recording, I prefer to record 4+ hours on one disc at LP speed. Although you can choose the LP default setting for timer recordings by going to the Service Bar and then Setup, if the power goes out and you do not reset this, the machine automatically goes back to the SP setting. The machine also records at SP if you manually hit the Record button. It IS possible to change the machine default record setting, but the instructions are on p.161 and are confusing; IMO this important detail ought to be described and clearly explained in the Introduction and set very early on in the operation of the machine.

Some have complained that the machine cannot copy Copyright-protected movies onto the hard disk for use in producing DVD copies. I think the producers of movies have the right to insist on this feature!

Panasonic DMR-EA18K Tunerless 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder Customer Review

I had the older version of this DVD recorder and it failed due to U61 code. The machine was at least 4 years old. I read all over the Internet and it was a common problem with Panasonic recorder. So, I started shopping for other brands not wanting to end up with another panasonic machine with the same problem.

Being familiar with the older panasonic and what it can do including higher playback resolution, it was very hard to replace the expectation. I tried Toshiba because of its price and feature, but I returned it immediately. I am a big fan of Sony, but the reviews of their DVD recorder were not favorable.

At that point, I was stuck without a DVD recorder for my daugther for 1 month. Desperate, I told my wife I am going back to Panasonic. She totally agreed as she really likes the features and the ease to operate. I started looking for this model DMR-EA18K. To my surprised, it was no way to be found. Everyone was out of stock. I placed an order directly with Panasonic and it took 2 weeks before they told me they are not shipping yet. I looked through Amazon and found one with better price and available now.

I have this unit for a few weeks now and have no complaint. In fact, this newer model is better. Case in point, when you do your programming, there is a preview window to show what is playing in the background. You don't need to get out of the programming mode to see the TV content. Also, I was worried I will be getting old stock with legacy "U" code problem. I looked at the back of the machine and found the manufacturing date to be very current - July 2009. I hope they have fixed all the issues and ship better machines. So far, it is working great and I love it!

Its very easy to dub from vhs to dvd. You can select recording mode for the dvd from fitting in one to 8 hours of video on one disc albeit with loss of quality. Then you just press one button on the remote labeled dubbing and away you go with your conversion.
You can also record tv shows onto the dvd. The instruction manual is very easy to use and explains everything. Love the product. All burns have been consistently good with no problems. Using DVD+R disks namebrand.
Its exactly what I have been looking for to convert vhs tapes to dvd.
Get it while available or another comparable newer Toshiba model.
