  • Compatibility with DVD movie, CD audio,CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, and VCD discs; DivX, JPEG, MP3 and WMA files
  • 3:2 pulldown detection adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps progressive scan video
  • Outputs: 1 composite, 1 S-Video, 1 component
  • DVD offer Dolby Digital/DTS decoding; coaxial digital audio output

Nicely affordable yet packed full of powerful video and audio playback features, the Toshiba SD-3990 single-disc, progressive scan DVD player has a stylishly silver, super-slim profile that measures just 1.65 inches high. It's also compatible with a wide variety of disc and digital file formats, including DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, and VCD discs as well as MP3, WMA, and JPEG (Kodak Picture and FujiColor CDs) content burned to disc. It's also DivX Home Theater Certified, meaning that it's compatible with video burned to disc using both the DivX video format.

The SD-3990 performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

With the JPEG Viewer, you can easily display your favorite digital photos and create custom slideshows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The interactive Digital Picture Zoom feature allows you to select an area of the video from a DVD and magnify it. Other DVD playback features include fast scan, slow motion, multi-angle selection, multi-subtitle selection, and parental lock.

You get vivid, realistic sound, thanks to Toshiba's 24-bit/192 kHz pulse code modulation (PCM) audio processor. PCM audio translates digital signals from your DVDs and CDs into warmer, natural sound. The DVD player offers Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can connect to a multi-channel home theater surround sound system via the coaxial digital audio output. It also produces 3D virtual surround sound from two speakers. It features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite A/V: 1
  • S-Video: 1
  • Component Video: 1
  • Digital audio: 1 coaxial

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

What's in the Box
Single-disc DVD player, remote control (with batteries), printed operating instructions

Toshiba SD-3990 Progressive Scan DVD Player Customer Review

I have owned this player for almost 2 years and have been very satisfied. Many other reviewers seem to have had a ton of problems. This player has played everything I have thrown in it, including downloaded .AVI files and PAL formatted DVDs from Europe. My DiVx DVDs play flawlessly. By reading these reviews, I am wondering if I got the only good one Toshiba made. Either way, I love this thing!

Toshiba HD-A3 720p/1080i HD DVD Player Customer Review

I love my HD-A3, it was affordable and I am buying HD DVD titles for a lot less than Blu-Ray. I have a Blu-ray player as well, a Sony S550, and it can not upconvert standard DVDs and good as my Toshiba HD-A3. I love both formats, but HD DVD is saving me money on similar titles that are out on BD.
Buy this while you can, it's a great deal.

I bought this a few months ago and was amazed at the simplicity of its operation. It has all the features you could possibly want. In all I am extremely pleased and wish they still made them, I would have bought another as a gift for my DVD fanatic aunt!

Description

  • No need to replace your current DVD library

Toshiba XD-E500 Upconverting 1080p Extended Detail DVD Player Customer Review

I have not had any problems with my Toshiba XD-E500 after months of use. I did find that it is best not to use some of the fancy effects because there are offsetting drawbacks. Also, one should calibrate the HDTV with THX, using an enabled DVD, as soon as possible. Your color accuracy sharpness, and sound will be enhanced.

The Toshiba XD-E500 works perfectly with REGZA Link on my Toshiba HDTV to provide enhancements, as well. Any Toshiba owners using HDMI should switch to REGZA Link, if the television set has it.

I use my Toshiba XD-E500 and an Apple TV device. After I've watched DVDs, I digitally convert the ones I purchased and want to keep for my iTunes library. The image quality is as good as or better than the DVD player's when played back on the same HDTV. Doing this can take a lot of hassle out of having the movie or television program you want to see right at hand.

I really don't understand the comments rife with lamentations. Maybe these commenters thought they were buying a Blu-Ray DVD player.

Toshiba SD-1800 DVD Player

Toshiba SD-1800 DVD Player Sale

Enjoy movies and music to the max with Toshiba's SD-2900 single-disc DVD player. ColorStream component-video outputs (for use with compatible TVs) virtually eliminate NTSC artifacts like video noise and dot crawl, while built-in MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) decoding give the freedom to compile music on a PC and listen to it on a stereo or TV. You can even watch customized digital-picture slideshows on a TV using recordable CDs filled with Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Picture CD, and standard JPEG image files.

Component-video splits the video signal into three separate components, which reduces the amount of signal processing required of your television. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. The "expanded" mode in the player's black-level setting produces richer, deeper black tones in every image.

In the audio realm, a set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material. Playback options include picture zoom, dialogue enhancement, QSound 3D Surround Sound (simulated surround for two-channel listening), parental lock, and compatibility with DVD and CD Text features (on encoded discs). The player comes with a full-function remote control.

  • ColorStream component-video output for ultimate DVD picture quality (when connected with an HD or HD-ready TV)

  • Digital Photo Viewer displays digital photographs on a television in a variety of digital formats

Toshiba SD-1800 DVD Player Customer Review

I've had this DVD player for several months now and have had no problems with it. The picture and sound quality are great and the hook up is very easy. I use this player for my bedroom and do not have a home theatre system in there, but this player works fine. My only beef is that it does not play special features for certain dvds, like Memento. Otherwise, a great buy

Toshiba XDE600 1080p Upconverted DVD Extended Detail Customer Review

I bought this one on a whim just to try out the extended detail enhancement feature. Of the three (Sharp, Color, Contrast) Sharp worked very well. I have a properly calibrated set, so the other two were pretty much of no use. On newer films Sharp added just the right amount of sharpness to scenes without additional halos or other edge enhancement artifacts (the better the film's cinematography the better it works). With older 4:3 aspect films or non-HD TV shows from the 90s the image is stretch and there is nothing I can do to fix it. My Vizio TV can't adjust for it (it just sees a 1080P image coming from the player and keeps it in its "normal" state - stretched in other words) and neither can the player. That's pretty frustrating and I may end up sending this back for that reason. Need to take stock of how many DVDs I rent that are 4:3. The audio is good/average. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly acceptable. The build quality of the unit is very light. The case of the player feels like a tin can and the remote is as tiny and lightweight as a child's toy. The buttons are very small and unintuitive.

Again, for what its basic purpose is (DVD upscaled playback), it does a great job on 16:9 widescreen material, particularly with Sharp enabled. The image quality rivals at times the Oppo DV-980H (no joke) and is slightly better than the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV. I wished Toshiba had chosen to put the XDE feature into a more quality player from a feature and build standpoint. It would have a real winner then - even at another say, for that quality.

Edit: Well, after a week or so of ownership I feel I was a bit too harsh on the XDE-600, so I bumped the rating up to four stars. The image quality is so good for the low price that I can overlook the deficiencies. Plus I found a work-around of sorts for the 4:3 aspect problem. Set the HDMI resolution to 480p in the player and it will display in the proper aspect ratio on the TV. The only snag is that the XDE settings won't work in anything but 1080p, but since they are mostly older movies (that use that format) I can live with it.
